A TRUSTED LEADER IN INDUSTRIAL DEMOLITION
ENSURING ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE
Ash ponds, crucial components in coal-fired power plant operations, serve as repositories for coal combustion residuals (CCR), such as fly ash and bottom ash. The closure of these ponds is a significant component of the power plant demolition process and is crucial to preventing environmental contamination and adherence to stringent regulatory standards.
Total Wrecking & Environmental, with its longstanding expertise in industrial demolition and environmental remediation, is exceptionally positioned to handle these complex closure processes. Our approach prioritizes not just regulatory compliance but also the safety and well-being of the surrounding communities and ecosystems.
WHY CHOOSE TOTAL WRECKING FOR ASH POND CLOSURE?
Our approach includes advanced dewatering techniques, essential in minimizing the environmental impact during closure. This process, coupled with our capability of drying and screening ash for potential resale, not only contributes to environmental conservation but also offers a sustainable solution in the waste management sector.
We specialize in various closure strategies including clean closure, in-place closures, and solidification, depending on the specific requirements of each site. Our expertise extends to the management of hazardous waste basin closures, encompassing both CCR Basin and CCR Landfill closures. Understanding the need for adaptability and precision, we also engage in CCR landfill construction and management, ensuring every aspect of the closure process aligns with the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance.
Leveraging our extensive experience in environmental services, we provide a comprehensive, reliable solution for the closure of ash ponds, ensuring they are addressed with the highest standards of environmental stewardship.
OUR ASH POND CLOSURE PROCESS
Ash ponds, also known as coal ash basins, are crucial structures for the containment of coal combustion residuals from power plants. Their proper management and closure are vital to prevent environmental contamination and adhere to regulatory standards.
Total Wrecking & Environmental’s ash pond closure process is meticulously structured to ensure safety, efficiency, and environmental protection and follows 3 main stages:
ASSESSMENT
We begin with a thorough site assessment, employing advanced surveying techniques to understand the unique characteristics of each ash pond. This includes analyzing soil, water, and ash compositions to devise a detailed closure plan.
PLANNING
With data from our assessments, we select appropriate closure methods, such as capping or removal, and create a timeline and budget that meet regulatory and client needs.
EXECUTION
We only use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques, like geomembrane liners for capping or advanced dredging for ash removal, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
Throughout each phase, Total Wrecking is committed to innovative solutions and the highest safety measures, reducing risks to both our team and the environment. Our process not only meets but often exceeds regulatory requirements.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
Total Wrecking employs advanced dewatering and solidification techniques, CCR Basin and Landfill closures, and hazardous waste basin closures, all of which ensure reduced environmental impact.
Ash ponds present environmental and health risks, primarily through potential soil and water contamination. Total Wrecking & Environmental employs advanced containment and remediation techniques that minimize environmental impact and safeguard public health.
Compliance with federal and state regulations is a cornerstone of our operations, which is why we adhere to stringent environmental laws and regulations, ensuring each project meets or exceeds legal requirements. Our team of power plant demolition experts maintains up-to-date certifications that comply with evolving federal, state, and local standards.
ASH POND CLOSURE SUCCESS STORY
ST. JOHN’S RIVER POWER PARK
The Site Work portion of this project was $15M of the total contract and included demolishing Lime and Coal crushing and mixing equipment, along with the plant’s Water Treatment Facility. All associated Ash, Settling, and Recovery Ponds, hard surfaces, and the Coal Storage Yards were removed in their entirety and backfilled. The projected generated 150,000 CY of concrete which was crushed and re-used on site for backfill along with an additional 370,000 CY of imported fill ,and 1M SqFt of asphalt which was recycled. The site was graded to pre-determined topography while sodding and hydro seeding completed the final restoration.
