A TRUSTED LEADER IN INDUSTRIAL DEMOLITION
ENSURING ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY & COMPLIANCE
Ash ponds store coal combustion residuals (CCR), including fly ash and bottom ash, generated by coal-fired power plants. Proper ash pond closure is a critical part of power plant decommissioning, helping prevent environmental contamination while meeting federal and state regulatory requirements.
Total Wrecking & Environmental provides comprehensive ash pond closure services backed by decades of industrial demolition and environmental remediation experience. Our team develops customized closure strategies that protect surrounding communities, restore sites, and prepare facilities for future redevelopment.
WHY CHOOSE TOTAL WRECKING FOR ASH POND CLOSURE?
Every ash pond presents unique environmental and engineering challenges. Our experienced team evaluates each site to determine the most effective closure strategy while minimizing environmental impact and controlling project costs.
Our services include:
- Advanced dewatering and water management
- Ash drying and screening for beneficial reuse
- Clean closure and closure-in-place
- CCR basin and CCR landfill closure
- Hazardous waste basin closure
- CCR landfill construction and management
From planning through final restoration, we provide complete turnkey solutions that emphasize safety, efficiency, and environmental stewardship.
OUR ASH POND CLOSURE PROCESS
Every project follows a structured process designed to meet regulatory requirements while minimizing environmental risks.
ASSESSMENT
Our team begins with a comprehensive site evaluation, including soil, groundwater, and ash analysis. These assessments identify site conditions and support the development of an effective closure strategy.
PLANNING
Using the assessment results, we develop a customized closure plan that outlines the selected closure method, project schedule, regulatory requirements, and construction approach.
EXECUTION
Our crews perform the work using specialized equipment and proven construction methods, including dewatering, excavation, capping, ash removal, and final site restoration. Every phase is carefully managed to reduce environmental impacts while maintaining project efficiency.
ENVIRONMENTAL & HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
Proper ash pond closure protects nearby soil, groundwater, and surrounding ecosystems from potential contamination. Total Wrecking uses proven containment, remediation, and waste management practices to minimize environmental risks throughout the project.
Our team remains current with evolving federal, state, and local regulations, ensuring every project is completed safely and in full compliance with applicable environmental standards.
ASH POND CLOSURE SUCCESS STORY
ST. JOHN’S RIVER POWER PARK
As part of this project, Total Wrecking completed approximately $15 million in site work, including demolition of the lime and coal crushing systems, mixing equipment, and the facility’s water treatment plant.
The project also included complete removal of ash ponds, settling ponds, recovery ponds, coal storage yards, and associated paved surfaces before final site restoration.
Material recovery included:
- 150,000 cubic yards of concrete crushed and reused onsite
- 370,000 cubic yards of imported fill placed for backfill
- More than 1 million square feet of asphalt recycled
Following demolition, the site was graded to its final design elevations before sod installation and hydroseeding completed the restoration process.
